The Peninsula Project and Celebration Calendar

The aim of the Peninsula Project is to develop and implement effective and efficient whole of government and whole of community solutions that address the issues facing young people and older people in the Peninsula area and to increase the community's capacity to resolve future issues as they arise. The need for a promotional tool to introduce the concept of the Peninsula Project to the community was identified through discussions with stakeholders and community members.

The development and production of the 2004 Peninsula Celebration Calendar assisted in establishing community, business and industry networks, gaining community confidence and increased understanding of the project’s objectives and philosophy. Members of the community such as Neighbourhood Watch, sporting groups, environmental organisations and Aboriginal groups, to name a few, were involved in the development and production of the calendar.

The calendar also promoted the services/opportunities that are currently being offered on the Peninsula and has provided a platform for the introduction of new concepts, partnerships and initiatives to encourage a safer, happier and healthier community.

The calendar included photographs of local people in identifiable locations on the Peninsula. The theme of the calendar was celebrating living on the Peninsula. There was also a strong emphasis on linking the community and promoting the focus areas of the project that is older people and young people, local businesses and community, service providers with members of their target groups. In addition the calendar promotes community safety services and programs.

The objectives of this project included:

  • Encouraging a sense of pride in the community;
  • Celebrating and acknowledging the great things about living on the Peninsula;
  • Promoting the vision for the future;
  • Creation of additional resources for future projects;
  • Inclusion of local people/businesses/community groups;
  • Promotion of the services that are offered on the Peninsula encouraging stronger partnerships and networks;
  • Promotion of community safety and raising community awareness about safety issues, campaigns and services.

Community groups and local businesses supported the calendar by selling them for $2. All monies received are being kept in trust by Neighbourhood Watch to fund future community-based projects. The media also provided extensive support to the project, with the calendar being featured in print and radio media from December 2003 until February 2004.

A database of people/groups that ordered the calendar prior to the launch will be used to evaluate the community acceptance levels of the calendar, effectiveness of safety information, usefulness of service information and suggested improvements.

A database has also been established of individuals and groups that have expressed an interest in being featured in the 2005 calendar. A steering committee made up of community and business members and Chaired by Neighbourhood Watch met in April 2004 to begin planning for the 2005 calendar.
