Brewarrina

$323,904 has been approved to the Brewarrina community for a range of crime prevention and community development strategies over three years from 2002 to 2005.

All of the initiatives funded in Brewarrina have been identified through working with the local community.

Community organisations, Local Government and State Government agencies worked to together to find solutions to priority issues affecting the Brewarrina community. In March 2002 the Premier’s Department met with Brewarrina community representatives to agree on initiatives that would assist to solve those issues.

The initiatives will address these issues identified by the community:

  • Youth crime rates
  • Providing positive recreation and social activities for young people
  • Domestic violence
  • Reducing crime and anti social behaviour
  • Improve coordination of Government services

The initiatives that will support crime prevention and community development in Brewarrina are:

  • $35,000 to upgrade the Brewarrina Youth Centre, in particular the kitchen to enable cooking classes and the provision of food for youth, the repair of the toilets and the refurbishing of the main activities area.  The Centre operates at least five nights a week and is attended by up to 150 youths a day.
  • $8,000 to upgrade equipment at the Brewarrina Youth Centre and provide outdoor recreational activities in support of cultural camps.  The various activities and camps would cater for around 50 young people per month.
  • $50,000 to provide recurrent funding for two years for a “Homemakers Program” which focuses on supporting parents and families through the provision of family support style intervention in the form of budgeting, cooking, self esteem, various life skills and parenting programs, subject to receipt of an acceptable working proposal.
  • $230,904 to provide recurrent funding for a Senior Youth Programs Officer to support and divert youth, specifically the 15-24 years age group, towards constructive activities and educational/training programs.
