Premier’s Council on Active Living

How it came about

The Premier's Council for Active Living ("PCAL") was established by Premier Carr in March 2004 in recognition of the need to increase collaboration and coordination of initiatives to promote physical activity across NSW. PCAL follows on from the work of The NSW Physical Activity Task Force, which met between 1996 and 2002.

What it will achieve

The Premier's Council for Active Living (PCAL) aims to build and strengthen the physical and social environments in which communities engage in active living.  The Council will initially focus on environments, children and young people, and older people.

What it does

The terms of reference of the Council are to:

  • Provide leadership and advice to the Premier to encourage more people, to be more active, more often;
  • Initiate and manage partnerships and harness resources, across government, non-government organisations and the private sector;
  • Work collaboratively with key organisations to develop a comprehensive physical activity strategy for NSW;
  • Make recommendations for mechanisms to implement and monitor progress against the strategy; and,
  • Report to the Premier every year.

The Council meets on a quarterly basis.

Who is involved

The Council reports to the Premier through the Minister for Health.  It is chaired by Ms Libby Darlison and consists of senior representatives from the following organisations:

  • Department of Health;
  • Department of Education and Training;
  • Department of Housing;
  • Department of Community Services – Communities Division;
  • Premier's Department;
  • Ministry of Transport;
  • Roads and Traffic Authority;
  • Fitness NSW;
