Quality of Life in Australia - An analysis of public perceptions

A discussion paper by Richard Eckersley for the Australia Institute.

"Deep down, beneath the satisfaction of everyday life, Australians are looking for a different paradigm, a new story to define who they are and where they want to go. Instead of one narrowly focussed on material progress, they want a coherent vision that expresses a better balance between economic welfare, social equity and environmental sustainability...What polls are measuring and qualitative surveys are explaining is a growing tension between Australians' values and their lifestyles."

These are some of the conclusions drawn from a survey reported in a discussion paper by Richard Eckersley, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, The Australian National University, for The Australia Institute.( Discussion Paper Number 23, September 1999)
