Quality of Life in Australia - An analysis of public perceptionsA discussion paper by Richard Eckersley for the Australia Institute.
"Deep down, beneath the satisfaction of everyday life, Australians are looking for a different paradigm, a new story to define who they are and where they want to go. Instead of one narrowly focussed on material progress, they want a coherent vision that expresses a better balance between economic welfare, social equity and environmental sustainability...What polls are measuring and qualitative surveys are explaining is a growing tension between Australians' values and their lifestyles." These are some of the conclusions drawn from a survey reported in a discussion paper by Richard Eckersley, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, The Australian National University, for The Australia Institute.( Discussion Paper Number 23, September 1999) Read the executive summary and full text (PDF).
