Developing Resilience at Every Stage of a Young Person’s LifeMission Australia's snapshot report that investigates some of the characteristics of Australians in the 6-16 age group and their families, and the importance of developing resilience at every stage of a young person’s life.
In recent years much emphasis has been placed on early childhood development as a key factor in laying the foundations for long-term wellbeing. However, considerably less attention has been given to the needs of children in the 6 to 16 year group and their families, a time of significant physical, cognitive and emotional growth, which takes place within increasingly complex family, school and community environments. This snapshot looks at some characteristics of Australians in the 6-16 age range, outlining new evidence about brain development and key points of effective intervention. Difficulties in this age range do not necessarily lead to poor outcomes in the long term, provided that appropriate strategies are developed, addressing the particular and diverse needs of this group.
