Community Resilience ManualA resource for rural recovery and renewal (Canada). The Community Resilience Manual, developed by the Centre for Community Enterprise in Canada is a detailed conceptual framework, process, and resource compilation for small towns that wish to assess and improve their capacity to control their social and economic future. The Manual is aimed at rural communities (focus on North America) that want to make better decisions about how to mobilise and invest community resources. It provides cost effective strategies for communities to assess their own state of resilience and establish priorities for strengthening it. The Manual defines a resilient community as one that "takes intentional actions to enhance the personal and collective capacity of its citizens and institutions to respond to, and influence the course of social and economic change". The Manual walks communities through the following steps:
the Manual is divided into 3 sections:Section 1 - The Guide includes exploring the concept of resilience, and outlines a suggested process for assessing local resilience. Section 2 Process Tools and Techniques includes a range of practical tools (surveys, interviews, structured community meeting, statistical data) to facilitate the collection information about your local community. Section 3: the Catalogue describes generic and wide ranging strategies that can be and have already been used to increase resilience. The Manual is free to all those who register and can be downloaded in PDF format. Registration requires providing your email address, organisation, and location but is otherwise free. Print copy by mail order is also available. Follow this link for the Community Resilience Manual (opens in a new browser window) For further information
