Toolkit: Tracking Progress

A British toolkit from Renewal.net that has been designed to assist organisations in tracking the progress of a community renewal project.

Renewal partnerships need to know whether and how far they are progressing towards achieving outcomes and meeting objectives. Tracking progress involves both short-term monitoring of activities and expenditure, and longer term evaluation of impact and outcomes. It is important that partnerships commit themselves to:

  • Sound monitoring systems.
  • Processes to enable reporting and monitoring of information to management.
  • Identifying and explaining any departures from original plans.
When tracking medium and longer term movement towards sustainable impact, partnerships need to:
  • Receive and approve an evaluation plan.
  • Recognise the linkages between local and national evaluations.
  • Consider the case for commissioning specific local evaluation studies.
The Progress Tracking Toolkit has two main components:
  • Establish monitoring arrangements
  • Evaluate a project
