Insurance information from NSW Council for Social Service

The NSW Council for Social Service Insurance Project provides insurance information and training and a bulk-buying insurance program for non-government organisations.

Insurance has dominated discussion in the social services sector, with many organisations being unable to obtain cover or struggling with drastically increased premiums.

In 2002, NCOSS approached the NSW State Government to assist the not for profit sector and received funding to implement a two-year Insurance project that involves:

  • establishing a bulk-buying insurance program,
  • providing ongoing information to assist non-government organisations identify their insurance needs, and
  • providing risk management training and information.

Specific activities being undertaken, in addition to the bulk buying insurance program, include:

  • Telephone information line to assist organisations with their insurance issues
  • Development and distribution of information materials such as:
    • Good practice guide to Insurance
    • Good practice guide to Risk Management
    • Information Sheets on areas of importance
  • Workshops and information sessions on Insurance and risk management
  • Insurance Research and Advocacy

The guide, published by NCOSS, demystifies insurance by providing simple, easily understood information for organisations struggling to understand the insurance process and what their policies cover them for.

The guide provides information on:

  • Selecting an insurance provider
  • Filling out proposal forms
  • Understanding your policy
  • Reducing your premium
  • Claims
  • 15 different types of insurance: what they are, when you need them, what they cover and other issues.

The price is $16 for Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS) members and $19 for non-members (GST inclusive)
