Toolkit: How to Build a Partnership

A British toolkit from Renewal.net. Partnership building is a requirement of almost all renewal and regeneration initiatives. As partnership fatigue sets in, it is essential to invest in partnership building in order to achieve a balance of both inclusiveness and effectiveness.

The Partnership Building Toolkit contains useful information covering the following key issues:
  • Deciding on who should be members, and recruiting them
  • Setting up the mechanisms that enable partnerships to work effectively and set standards of behaviour
  • Sharing power and engaging minority interests - making sure that the more influential partners do not  dominate
  • Developing the capacity of all the partners to play a full part in the activities of the partnership
  • Communication and accountability - letting those outside the partnership know what is going on.

The Building Partnerships Toolkit has four main components:
  • Deciding partnership roles and recruiting members
  • Working in partnership
  • How to build local capacity
  • Establish accountability
