Advocacy - Dr John Murphy

For community workers, taking on an advocacy role generally means acting on behalf of the community, a group or an individual within the community. (Ife, 2002)

Workshop Paper presented by Dr John Murphy, Mornington Peninsula Community Connections, at the Network of Inner East Community Houses Inc, Victoria, 17th June 2003.

Rather than provide an A-Z of advocacy, Dr Murphy shares some of his personal thoughts and experiences on the topic which are based on his experiences as a community worker over the last 22 years.

The paper includes:

  • Different terms for advocacy
  • A range of advocacy examples
  • Methods of Advocacy
  • Factors that will influence the effectiveness of your advocacy efforts
