A Brief Review of 20 Tools to Assess Capacity

A survey of twenty organisational capacity assessment tools, drawing from publicly available resources of non-profit organisations, management consultancies, United Nations agencies and other donor organisations.

Produced by the Capacity Development Group of the United Nations Development Programme, this review contains information and links to online documents which are intended to serve as a preliminary resource for development practitioners.

The tools include surveys, models, field guides, worksheets, workshops and toolkits. Contributing organisations include CARE, the World Bank and UNICEF.

Specific areas addressed by different tools include:

  • Organisational capacity assessment
  • NGO partner capacity assessment
  • Institutional analysis
  • Project planning
  • Self assessment
  • Stakeholder analysis
