Sydney Community Foundation

The Sydney Community Foundation is an independent, charitable community foundation that manages and distributes funds on behalf of individuals, families, companies and other charitable trusts to meet the needs of their community.

Sydney Community Foundation (SCF) originated in a feasibility study, financially supported by the NSW Premier’s Department, which confirmed that Sydney residents would embrace their own community foundation, provided that it considered the overall greater Sydney community and respected the diverse groups in it.

Four founding members came together to work co-operatively on building the Foundation – CAF Australia, United Way Sydney, Philanthropy Australia and the Sydney Community Foundation company.

This is a first in Australia and it was felt that each organization had valuable contributions to make to the Sydney Community Foundation.

Financial support for infrastructure costs was received from several donors including the NSW Premier's Department, The Myer Foundation and some Sydney individuals.

Sydney Community Foundation Grants

The Foundation supports worthwhile, community-focussed projects, addressing a wide range of problems.

Current strategic priority areas:

  • Youth at risk
  • Young families (particularly social issues facing women and children)
  • Indigenous and culturally diverse communities
  • The aged (particularly reducing isolation of older people and connecting them with others in the community)
  • Community environment projects demonstrating sustainability (particularly related to native flora, urban renewal and community gardening)

Grants are made at least once a year. Grant applications will be considered within two months from receipt of application. The process may include presentations from applicants or site visits by Board members.
