Leadership with a difference:
An introduction to adaptive leadership

Four day residential program: Tuesday 19 August – Friday 22 August 2008, Central Coast NSW

We are living in highly complex times. Decision makers are facing new and difficult challenges such as climate change and globalisation, but too often they fail to adequately respond, resorting to easy ‘quick fix’ solutions while avoiding the underlying issues.

The challenges of the 21st century demand new, more effective models of leadership.

Traditional approaches tend to focus on leadership as an innate, individual quality, emphasising the importance of charisma, and gaining power and influence. Adaptive leadership views leadership as an activity rather than a position. It focuses on getting people to face reality, mobilises people to tackle tough problems, emphasises purpose and requires people to deal with complexity and uncertainty.

The Sydney Leadership Centre uses the adaptive leadership model as the basis for Leadership with a difference: An introduction to adaptive leadership.

This four day residential program offers participants a unique opportunity to explore what it means to exercise effective leadership in challenging environments. Highly interactive, it includes a mixture of theory, reflection, practice and community engagement. Participants are also encouraged to reflect on their own assumptions, purpose and values.

The content and structure of this introductory program is based on The Benevolent Society’s award winning Sydney Leadership Program and reflects our belief that a network of committed individuals working together can bring about profound change.

This program is run by The Benevolent Society's Sydney Leadership Centre. For more information go to our website www.bensoc.org.au
