Educational and recreational camp for young women
The Tenterfield Family and Youth Support Service in conjunction with Tenterfield CDAT organised an overnight educational and recreational camp for young women, most of whom, identify as Aboriginal. This camp took place at the Carriage stop in Ballandean on the 18th and 19th of January 2007. The purpose of the camp was to increase skills and knowledge of the young woman in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to, violence, sexual health, living skills and drugs and alcohol. This was achieved by providing a range of educational speakers and activities for the women in a relaxed environment. Guest speakers included Annette Slatter from Hunter New England Health giving a talk on Sexual Health and Hepatitis C. Talks were provided by staff from Tenterfield Family and Youth Support Service and Tenterfield Inverell Glen Innes Youth Services (Supported accommodation). On such issues as living skills, relationships, drugs and alcohol. The young women were also treated to a mystery tour, dinner and a Bodyshop foot spa, pamper and treatment. The young women also participated in art and craft activities. Young women from both Tenterfield and Glen Innes took part in the camp. Feedback from all involved was exceptional. This is the second such camp, with the first being for Aboriginal women.
