Shoalhaven Community Drug Action Team supports Nowra high school Trivia night

Shoalhaven Community Drug Action Team and Nowra high school organise a night of performance, trivia and tantalising food to raise community awareness of issues around drugs & alcohol

On June 24 2004, twelve year 11 students from Nowra High School in conjunction with the Shoalhaven CDAT organised a night of Trivia and activities at the Water’s Edge Restaurant in Nowra, to raise awareness of drug and alcohol issues.

The event provided an opportunity to:

  • Increase awareness of drug and alcohol issues
  • Enhance communication between parents and adolescents about drug issues
  • Develop the students’ performance and facilitation skills
  • Provide an opportunity for families to have a fun night free of drugs and alcohol

There were activities to stimulate further discussion, these included:

  • The ‘Hot Seat’ which was a fun way to explore how we make decisions
  • ‘Hidden Thoughts’ which looks at communication between parents and young people, both spoken words and unspoken thoughts.

The night was only possible due to the commitment of members from the Shoalhaven CDAT, Nowra High School and all the sponsors who donated prizes for the night.

The night was well attended by young people, adults, families and community workers. The feedback received was really positive, comments included:

  • “Great to have such a fun night without drugs and alcohol”
    “Learning can be fun”
  • “Young people do take an interest in the community”
  • “Adults are interested in what young people have to say about drug & alcohol issues”

“Looking forward to the next trivia night”
