North Coast Region and Community Drug Action Teams
Information and contact details for the North Coast region and Community Drug Action Teams.
OverviewThe Drugs and Community Action Strategy (DCAS) North Coast Region stretches 550km by road from Taree in the south to Tweed Heads on the Queensland border, encompassing 13 local government areas. The North Coast is characterised by rapid population growth with young people and Aboriginal Australians comprising a larger than average proportion of the population. A popular holiday destination, North Coast coastal centres experience doubling and tripling of their populations over holiday periods. We have eleven Community Drug Action Teams with moves to establish a twelfth in Byron Bay. Community Drug Action Teams in this region have focussed on building public awareness of drug issues and opportunities, as well as education campaigns targeting young people and parents. The arts – theatre, dance, painting, murals – have been popular communication mediums. Each North Coast Community Drug Action Team has adopted unique strategies and priorities in response to the particular characteristics of their communities. Regional projectsThe North Coast region have also undertaken projects at a regional level.
