OverviewThe Drugs and Community Action Strategy (DCAS) Hunter Region is located 130 kilometres north of Sydney encompassing a diverse range of geographic landforms, environments, industries and population centres. It covers 31,011 sq km and includes 13 local government areas, Cessnock Maitland Port Stephens, Newcastle Lake Macquarie, Great Lakes, Dungog, Gloucester, Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone, Merriwa and Murrurundi. The estimated population in 2002 was 595, 030 with the majority of the population (84%) located in the five local government areas of the Newcastle Region. This area is the sixth largest urban area in Australia. There are currently 8 Community Drug Action Teams located in the Hunter Region. The CDATs are actively involved in improving awareness about drug use and working with organisations and community members to take action on drug-related concerns. The CDATS have undertaken a diverse range of projects and act as a resource for information about local drug issues and trends.
