Cannabis Information Campaign Phase 3
A campaign targeting early and potential users of cannabis. It aims to encourage discussion amongst young people about the social, health and other effects of cannabis use.
The cannabis information campaign was developed by the NSW Government in response to significant research into the use and effects of the drug. In Australia, more than a third of 14-19 year olds have used cannabis. Studies point to adverse health and psychological effects from cannabis use, coupled with social impacts, impaired driving and relationship difficulties. The NSW Special Minister of State, John Della Bosca, announced a third phase of the Cannabis Information Campaign on 20 June 2004. This latest phase of the Cannabis Information Campaign targets young people aged 13 - 19 years and features a series of six posters which aim to raise awareness about the possible consequences of cannabis use. These posters show thought-provoking images and messages about the ways that cannabis can impact on relationships and friendships, physical health, driving ability, workplace behaviour and finances. When announcing the new phase of the campaign, Mr Della Bosca said “Cannabis is not harmless. It can cause significant health and social problems and we need to get that message to young people in ways they can relate to and in places where they go.” The posters went on display on 21 June 2004. Young people will see the posters:
The six posters can be downloaded below. One of the key messages in the series focuses on the effect that cannabis use can have on your driving ability. “Young people need to be aware that driving when affected not only puts their own lives at risk, but the lives of those around them,” Mr Della Bosca said. Three of the posters also appear as an animated cinema advertisement. The advertisement is being aired on community language stations. The Campaign was launched to coincide with Drug Action Week® which took place this year from 21-25 June. Drug Action Week is a national week of activities to raise awareness about alcohol and other drug issues and to promote the achievements of those who work to reduce drug related harm.
