Community drug information initiative

There are no simple solutions to the drug problem, but we can all make a difference if we share responsibility.

Our community drug information initiative highlights some of the simple actions people can take and the range of information and support services available to those concerned about drugs and related issues in NSW.

Examples of these simple actions include:

  • reading the Family Matters booklet on how to support a family member with a drug problem
  • getting information about drugs from your local library or an accredited web-site
  • ringing a support line for advice on how to help a friend with a drug problem - ADIS: ph.9361 8000 (within Sydney) or 1800 422 599 (outside Sydney)
  • talking with family/friends about the issue

Our information initiative has a number of key components:

  • Family Matters a drug information booklet for families
  • drug info @ your library project
  • A series of posters and messages to highlight these initiatives and the other simple ways people can access information and support on drug issues

In 1999, the NSW Government held a Drug Summit. The Summit brought together drug experts, parents, community leaders, former users and Members of Parliament who discussed the ways communities can help to reduce drug-related problems.

The Community Drug Information Initiative is a key recommendation of the Summit.

Bob Carr MP, Premier of NSW and John Della Bosca MLC, Special Minister of State launched the Initiative on 29 October 2002 at Parliament House in Sydney.
