Play By the Rules

Online training and information resource for sport and recreation clubs and associations on how to prevent and deal with inappropriate behaviour, including discrimination, harassment, favouritism, bias and various forms of abuse.

Play by the Rules has three main aims:

  1. Information. To give you information exploring discrimination, harassment and child protection.
  2. Rights. To explore what your rights are, and how the law protects your right to participate in sport and recreation activities and not be unfairly discriminated against.
  3. Responsibilities. To ensure that you know about your responsibilities under the law.

You have the right to be treated fairly, and to feel safe. You have the responsibility not to discriminate against others and to treat others fairly and with respect.

Play by the Rules is for administrators and managers of clubs, coaches, umpires and referees, members, players and participants in sport or recreational activities

Play by the Rules contains:

  • Online Training Programs for coaches, administrators, umpires, players, participants and volunteers. The courses are short and an official certificate is issued on successful completion.
  • Frequently asked questions with answers provided.
  • Legislation on equal opportunity and child protection
  • Summaries of court decisions involving sport and equal opportunity
  • New issues of interest
  • Resources to download and use
  • Links to other relevant sport websites
  • Forum to contribute your questions and comments
  • Quick reference to state and federal laws relating to sport and equal opportunity in Australia

Play By The Rules is a joint initiative of the Equal Opportunity Commission of South Australia and the South Australian Office for Recreation and Sport.

It was written and produced by the Equal Opportunity Commission of South Australia and the South Australian Office for Recreation and Sport and has been endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission.

The operation of equal opportunity laws is very similar throughout Australia, so that the information and activities in Play by the Rules will be useful wherever you live. There are, however, significant differences between the laws of the individual states.
