Australia 21 LimitedAustralia 21 was formed in 2001 as a non-profit group to fill a national need for fresh and independent thinking and research about large, unsolved problems that confront Australians in the new century.
The group acts in partnership with private sector, academic and government bodies as well as corporate and philanthropic sponsors who share the board's focus on the future. They create networks by drawing on outstanding researchers and experts from diverse institutions and disciplines, nationally and internationally, and from various sectors of society. They bring together in roundtables and ongoing research, networks of the best minds available and provide them with opportunities to interact in ways that are not usually available. Australia 21 currently has four programs: Australians in Society Australians in the Landscape Australia in the World Building Australia's Resilience Within each of these programs are one or more projects. Australia 21 Projects can only be successful with strong partnerships. Their stakeholders are all Australians, including State and Federal governments, corporations, universities and community groups. They serve them by focusing on difficult and long term issues that enhance the links between science, business and policy. Australia 21 fills a critical gap in publicly and privately funded research in Australia, undertaking genuine multi-disciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration on the major challenges facing Australia. Despite growing rhetoric about the importance of such approaches, the scientific 'playing field' remains tilted heavily against them. Funding and positions remain overwhelmingly geared towards research in specific disciplines addressing narrowly defined problems.
