Understanding Sprawl - David Suzuki Foundation Report and action Toolkit

The David Suzuki Foundation's report, "Understanding Sprawl", and toolkit "Driven to Action" encourage communities to reshape urban areas.

The ever-expanding sprawl of Canada’s cities must be one of the first issues addressed by all levels of government because it is seriously affecting the health of Canadians, says a new report from the David Suzuki Foundation.

Sprawl is responsible for increased air pollution, rising obesity rates and loss of agricultural land, the report highlights.

“The time to address this critical issue is now,” said David Suzuki, a Canadian scientist and broadcaster. “The more cities sprawl outward, the more we damage the environment and our health. We need to design communities so that the people who live in them use their cars less and have a much lower impact on the environment, and a better quality of life in return.”

Tthe Suzuki Foundation’s new report, Understanding Sprawl, also includes a user-friendly toolkit Driven to Action: Stopping Sprawl in your Community designed to help communities stop sprawl and encourage them to put pressure on all levels of government.

  • Getting Started: A brief overview of what you can do to stop sprawl in your neighbourhood
  • Sprawl Facts: Learn why sprawl is a problem
  • Shaping Decisions: Find out how to contact politicians and decision makers and express your concerns
  • Working with the Media:Tips on how to get your message in the news
  • Tools: Examples of tools to help you get started
