Resources for Safe and Healthy Koori Communities

Aboriginal Safety Promotion Officers from the Shoalhaven Aboriginal Safe Community Partnership have produced an anti-depression Toolkit and a Fire Safe poster to help promote a safe and healthy community.

Shoalhaven Aboriginal Safe Community Partnership (SASCP) is a partnership of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people who recognise and support the initiatives of the local Aboriginal community in preventing injury and promoting safety amongst Aboriginal people.

The local Shoalhaven Safety Promotion Officers – Athol Lester and Terri Farrelly – have been working hard over the last few years running programs with the community, for example a water-based exercise program (hydrotherapy) for Elders to help prevent falls, swimming classes for toddlers and sports injury prevention such as strapping classes.

Their latest efforts have been to produce some resources for the community which will help to prevent injury and keep us safe.

Aboriginal Depression Toolkit

The toolkit provides “help when you’re feeling down” and is full of practical information.

To produce the Toolkit, Terri worked in Partnership with Lifeline’s “Just Ask” Program (A Rural Mental Health Information Service Phone: 1300 13 11 14) and with the Shoalhaven Aboriginal Safety Promotion Program, the Shoalhaven Aboriginal Safe Community Partnership, Illawarra/Shoalhaven Aboriginal Mental Health Advisory Committee, Southern.IML  Pathology, Telstra, and the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing under the National Mental Health Strategy.

The Toolkit was launched at the South Coast Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation on Friday 16 April 2004.

Firefighters Are Our Friends Poster

Athol’s latest community program has been the “Firefighters Are Our Friends” program, for which he has produced a poster and brochure especially aimed at keeping Koori kids safe.

We believe that a healthy and safe Aboriginal community is the foundation for Aboriginal self-determination and strengthening partnerships with the broader community. It is the basis of true reconciliation.
