Self-directed services and personal budgets for people receiving Government benefits

We are a national movement of individuals, families, services, businesses, and governments to change the system of funding social support, education and health care in Australia.

Across the country, and throughout the world, many large and small groups of individuals and families, in partnership with businesses and governments, are in the process of making a new system - where people know what they are entitled to and can allocate the money that is assigned for their benefit. This system is called Self-Directed Support, or Consumer-Directed Care.

Internationally, this trend towards personalisation of funding is well-advanced. In Australia it is beginning in accident compensation, disability, and now aged care. Technical and vocational education will move this way too. But Australian governments and institutions have been very slow to pick it up. We aim to pull them into the 21st century.

We have tools and information available to help you take control of your own arrangements to suit your needs.

With providers, businesses and governments, we are working together to build best practice in Self-Directed Services and Personal Budgets - and enable individuals and families to exercise as much control as possible over their lives through control over their money.

The Mamre Association in Brisbane has pioneered a model of family-managed funds over a 27 year period. It hosts family-managed funds on behalf of its participating families, enabling families to determine their own priorities and employ their own support staff, even though Mamre receives its funding in a conventional provider-allocated format.

This model has wide applicability throughout Australia. Consumers and families may arrange for self and family-management along these lines in aged care, disability, chronic illness, mental health, and education, where they have a host organisation willing to host these arrangements on their behalf.

We have established a National Register of organisations willing to host consumer and family-managed arrangements in various areas. It is our hope that every individual and family who wants to commence these arrangements can be directed to an appropriate host to get started, without waiting for prior public policy changes.

Call for Expressions of Interest

Expressions of interest are invited from consumers and families wanting to self-manage their disability supports.

Our aim is to direct consumers and families around the country to appropriate host agencies willing to host consumer/family-managed arrangements.

National Register of Disability Agencies Willing to Host Consumer/Family-Managed Arrangements

Expressions of interest are invited from disability agencies around the country willing to host consumer/family-management arrangements, and willing to be publicised as hosting these arrangements.
