Introduction to Safer Design Guidelines

The Victorian government has launched an Introduction to Safer Design Guidelines to raise awareness about the need to consider safety in urban design and planning.

The Introductory brochure to the Safer Design Guidelines for Victoria outlines the key safer design principles contained in the comprehensive design guidelines.

These principles need to be considered in urban planning to reap the benefits that will result from well-designed and maintained urban environments.

They will be used to guide the design, planning, refurbishment and maintenance of public and private spaces.

The Guidelines will be introduced into the Victorian state planning framework in response to two key government strategies:

• Melbourne 2030, a plan for managing the growth of Melbourne over the next 30 years; and
• Safer Streets and Homes - A Crime and Violence Prevention Strategy for Victoria 2002 - 2005.

The Safer Design Guidelines themselves will be launched in a few months along with a Safer Design Training Package and a Community Safety Audit Kit.
