Safer Cities Tools from the United Nations Habitat Program

The Safer Cities Program, in collaboration with its partners in the different projects and through international co-operation, has developed a set of tools to deal with crime in urban areas.

These tools are under continuous development through the extraction of lessons learnt and the dissemination of experiences.

They are designed to:

• help determine the extent and nature of crime,
• develop adequate prevention strategies and solutions based on each specific problem
• define the modalities of implementation of the measures.

The tools are used at different stages in the development of a Safer Cities project and thus fall under different categories:

• Assessment
• Crime prevention
• Implementation
• Institutionalisation
• Regional capacity building
