Activity packs for kids in rural and regional communities
This new idea is called kidsouttaschool. Our motto is “strong, smart and friendly”. It's a new program that supports children from Kindy through the transition to High School in the hours they are not at school. It's based on the "Activity Pack".
The Activity Pack
It’s a menu of playful activities to reinforce skills and art, craft and group play. The pack is ability-appropriate so there are 7 “levels” of packs. Each one is different. There are enough for a year at each level if you do 2 or 3 a week. The packs work in different contexts like after school, in Vacation Care, out of home care and any other context where kids want something to do. The site facilitates mentoring and provides a show case for the kids’ creative output.
Mentors.
We create co-learning partnerships of kids with adults. We build a reliable net of care so children know they are valued and are known. Mentors are engaged from the community. This “piece” of K.O.S. taps into CSR, a growing source of volunteers in professions whose companies seek “coalface” opportunities for their staff.
KOS trains mentors and provides online scheduling for centres that engage with K.O.S. Trained, and vetted Mentors are supervised and matched with children by the Coordinator in a Centre.
