One Umbrella - Food Collection and DistributionOne Umbrella is a unique organisation which collects food that cannot be used and turns it into nutritious meals for the homeless and hungry of Melbourne.
One Umbrella started five years ago when a group of people in Melbourne became concerned with food waste. Governed by a volunteer Board One Umbrella operates through the gifts, time and talents of 150 volunteers. The organisation is supported by four part time staff. “Unwanted” food is provided to us by seventy organisations. This may include food that is close to use by date or food that is excess to needs for many reasons. The food must be safe to consume. Due to our work with government, donors are protected from legal action under Victoria’s “Good Samaritan Act”. In 2004/5 we reduced the amount of food going to landfill by approximately 42 tonnes. In 2004, One Umbrella provided 183,000 meals at no cost to agencies working with the homeless and hungry. The goal is to make and distribute 230, 000 meals to member agencies in 2005 - 2006. Some of the new agencies in 2005 included the Sacred Heart Mission, and many rooming house activity groups in the City of Port Phillip.
