Health Promotion Capacity Building

From the Health NSW website, this Capacity Building section focuses on capacity building in health promotion.

Capacity building is an approach to development that builds independence. It increases the range of people, organisations and communities who are able to address problems, and in particular, problems that arise out of social inequity and social exclusion.

Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over the determinants of health and thereby improve their health. To reach a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being an individual or group must be able to identify and realise aspirations, to satisfy needs and to change or cope with the environment.

The Capacity Building section of the website contains:
  • Case studies - provide the ideal opportunity to share and learn from the experiences of others
  • Indicators - this report contains nine checklists, each with a number of indicators, developed for health promotion practitioners to assess the quality of their overall work practice.
  • Resources and contacts –reviews, publications, related links, Public Health Bulletin and more
  • Community capacity – Community Capacity Index and Manual
  • Key questions answered – what is community capacity, does it work and how to do it?
  • Framework – the language, principles and framework for action for capacity building
  • Links to useful resources
