Growing Up Strong GuringA book for Aboriginal parents and family workers in the Inner West of Sydney. It gives simple advice about raising children aged 0-5 years to help them have a good start to a healthy life.
'Guring' is ths Eora word for young child. This first stage of life is the most important time for parents to spend time with their guring and make sure that they get a good start in life. Growing Up Strong Guring offers basic child development information in a simple format and using words from the Eora language, as well as culturally-appropriate games. Similar books have been produced for the North Coast and New England areas. The NSW Government’s Aboriginal Child, Youth and Family Strategy, which focuses on improving the wellbeing of Aboriginal communities, funded the publication. The NSW Department of Community Services has worked with other government agencies and Aboriginal communities to implement the strategy.
