Green Building Council of Australia

The Green Building Council of Australia aims to develop a sustainable property industry for Australia and drive the adoption of green building practices through market-based solutions.

Launched in 2002, the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) is a national, not-for-profit organisation that is uniquely supported by both industry and governments across the country. The organisation is funded by membership income and sponsorship only. GBCA's key objectives are to:

  • Drive the transition of the Australian property industry towards sustainability by promoting green building programs, technologies, design practices and operations.

  • Integrate green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings.

In order to achieve these objectives, the GBCA launched a Green Star environmental rating system for buildings in 2003, providing 'Green Star' rating tools to help the property industry to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, improve occupant health and productivity and achieve real cost savings, while showcasing innovation in sustainable building practices.

The GBCA runs accredited professional courses throughout Australia to expand industry knowledge about Green Star and green building practices.

The Council also runs and participates in a wide range of events, including major conferences and industry seminars, and hosts regular member-only educational and networking forums around Australia.

The Economics of Green Buildings

GBCA has published “Dollars and Sense of Green Buildings 2006: Building the Business Case for Green Commercial Buildings in Australia”.

The first of its kind in Australia, "The Dollars and Sense of Green Buildings 2006" demonstrates the business case for green buildings.
