A Bountiful Harvest: Community Gardens and Neighbourhood Renewal in Waterloo

This report details research funded by the University of NSW Faculty of the Built Environment which examines the community gardens in the Waterloo Public Housing Estate in Sydney.

The Community Gardens Project on the Waterloo Public Housing Estate started in 1996 as an initiative of the NSW Department of Housing South Sydney Council and the University of NSW.

This is the first comprehensive report of the project and the first significant study of community gardens in Australia.

The report proves what gardeners have long suspected – green spaces in dense urban environments give residents a sense of wellbeing, ownership and safety.

The Report documents:

  • the history of the Cook, Marton and Solander gardens in Waterloo
  • their qualities and characteristics
  • the experiences of the gardeners who live on the estate.

The report is available as a book or a CD.
