Towards an Inclusive Society - Address by Hon. Justice Michael Kirby, 16/10/02This address traces the changes in Australian society from the days when many groups were excluded from full participation in society to a more inclusive Australia which still has a way to go.
When Justice Michael Kirby was welcomed as a Justice of the High Court, he pointed out that "the good old days" were not so good in Australia if you happened to be Aboriginal, a woman, an Asian Australian, gay or a member of another disadvantaged minority excluded from full participation in Australian society. Gradually things have changed, but civil society, national and international, needs to be strengthened by non-government and like organisations devoted to encouraging participation of people in all aspects of the decisions that affect their lives. The establishment of Chain Reaction Foundation is a valuable move to promote participation in civil society which is the true badge of citizenship.
