Intergenerational Practice

Intergenerational practice aims to bring generations together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities which promote greater understanding and respect between generations and help to build more cohesive communities.

Intergenerational practice is inclusive, building on the positive resources that different generations have to offer each other and those around them. Intergenerational approaches are an effective way to address a number of issues - many of them key government priorities - such as building active communities, promoting citizenship, regenerating neighbourhoods and addressing inequality.

The Centre for Intergenerational Practice (UK)

This centre aims to support the development of intergenerational practice throughout the UK and to promote an understanding of the potential of intergenerational approaches to address social issues.

The Centre’s website provides a wealth of resources, links, reports, research and policies.

Some examples of its publications include:

Intergenerational Resource List
This list was created in August, 2003, by Abbie Lawrence, a doctoral candidate in the Joint Doctoral Program in Social Work and Sociology at the University of Michigan. It contains information on approximately 1,000 references which Abbie found while working on her dissertation research on intergenerational community building and empowerment. Hopefully, this resource will be of use to others in the intergenerational studies arena working to learn and make sense of this growing literature.
