Nimmitabel – Top of the Range: Building a better future

Marjory Kobold’s presentation at the NSW Department of State and Regional Development Community Economic Development Conference showcasing the history, achievements, products and business potential of Nimmitabel, NSW and surrounding districts.

Situated in the Snowy Mountains, Nimmitabel is a village with a population of 290 people, rich in tradition, historical sites, strong and independent. The loss of the town’s sawmill in 1990 resulted in over 40 jobs being lost, and the village has developed a strategy to develop business, tourism and employment opportunities, whilst improving Nimmitabel’s appearance, facilities, services, social networks and resources and increasing community pride and harmony.

Since 2002, local community organisations have worked together and achieved a number of significant outcomes for the community, including:

  • The ‘Back to Nimmitybelle Centenary Show’ festival weekend in February 2003;
  • The opening of a heritage trail in May 2003;
  • Refurbishment of the former bush nursing hospital into the multi-purpose community centre;
  • A ‘town logo’ competition resulting in new town entrance signs being erected and landscaping work completed;
  • A gallery and coffee shop opened, and the local ‘Café Inimitable’ revamped;
  • Welcome parties held for new residents; and
  • Heritage trails and brochures developed in conjunction with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Nimmitabel has undertaken significant social changes over the past 3 years. Community attitudes have become more optimistic for the future, positive energy is flowing, and there is more involvement and greater co-operation between individuals and groups.
