Creating Our Future - Youth Vision and Action for the NSW Central Coast

The Jigsaw Project (Central Coast Child and Youth Strategy) and the Futures Foundation partnered in a futuring process for young people which created a preferred vision for the Central Coast in 2020 and implemented three practical action plans to help achieve that future.

The Jigsaw Project and the Futures Foundation engaged young people on the NSW Central Coast in a process of exploring alternative futures and designing the kind of future they want for their own communities.

In this process, a group of about 20 young people attended four workshops and interviewed community leaders about their views of the future.

The workshop participants

• Learnt more about what makes a healthy community
• Learned basic futures concepts, models and methodologies
• Prepared a questionnaire to survey community leaders on their views of their community's present and future.
• Developed alternative scenarios for the future of the Central Coast
• Developed a preferred future in the form of a vision for the Central Coast
• Prepared a presentation of the process and results for community leaders
• Identified and implemented 3 action plans with a high probability of success.

The preferred vision which the young people developed is of a welcoming, sustaining and enterprising community "where we can think, plan, dream and play".

The Jigsaw Project has received further funding to partner again with the Futures Foundation to carry out a similar project in the Wyong Shire.
