Aboriginal Business Resources

The NSW Department of State and Regional Development assists Aboriginal people to start-up and stay in business through a range of services and programs delivered in Sydney and regional areas.

The Department’s programs help Aboriginal Australians develop and manage a business at all stages from getting started, employing staff, introducing technology, improving products and processes and taking the first steps into overseas markets.

The Department under the Budyari Ngalaya program also assists Aboriginal-owned firms to form partnerships with large Australian firms. These partnerships may involve employment for Aboriginal people, supplying of goods and services by Aboriginal firms or mentoring for newly-established business.

Eligibility

Firms and business people seeking assistance under the Aboriginal Business Development Program must operate or intend to operate a business that is majority-owned or controlled by Aboriginal people and its business operations are based in New South Wales.

In addition to the programs for Aboriginal businesses the Department has a range of mainstream small business programs that Aboriginal businesses may be eligible to access.

They include the following programs:

  • Innovation
  • Tourism Business
  • Women in Business

Indigenous Business and Community Services Directory.

Another important and comprehensive resource available to Indigenous start up businesses is the Indigenous Business and Community Services Directory. This resource enables a search of Aboriginal Land Councils through an interactive map, together with a facility to register to become part of the database.
