Housing for Communities

The communitybuilders.nsw website is about community development. Information on physical buildings and housing for communities can be obtained from organisations suggested in this article.

Organisations in New South Wales that can offer practical support and advice on housing especially for low income groups include:

NSW Office of Community Housing

Undertakes the strategic development of the community housing sector and promotes client-focused and efficient service delivery by the 400 community housing providers in NSW.

The Office is responsible for the planning and delivery of a range of services including:

  • Housing Associations and Co-operatives Program
  • Crisis Accommodation Program
  • Housing Partnership Program and the
  • Social Housing Subsidy Program

In addition to its Head Office at Parramatta, the NSW Office of Community Housing operates through five regional teams at Grafton, Newcastle, Wollongong, Orange and Queanbeyan which ensure local links to community housing providers across the state.

NSW Federation of Housing Associations

The NSW Federation of Housing Associations is the peak industry body for housing associations in NSW.  Housing associations are not-for-profit managers and developers of low cost housing.

The Federation has grown to be a representative voice for housing associations, a provider of a wide range of good practice advice and resources, a facilitator of the ongoing development of the sector, and the leading provider of social housing training in Australia.

The website provides direct links to the peak bodies (resourcing agencies) for the 3 main types of community housing:

  • Housing Associations
  • Tenant managed Housing Co-operatives
  • Church-based Housing

It also includes a list of Housing Associations in NSW.
