Bowling Alone: America's declining social capital, by Robert PutnamIn this much discussed article, Robert Putnam looks at the erosion of social capital - how society has become increasingly disconnected from friends, neighbours, community and democratic processes - and what may be done to re-connect it. Robert Putnam writes extensively on international affairs, politics and democracy. He is a Professor of International Affairs at Harvard University. In this article published in Journal of Democracy 6:1, Jan 1995, 65-78, Putnam discusses the link between social networks and economic development, between social connectedness and successful government. The changing pattern of political and social participation in the US has led to a decline in voter participation, union membership, parent-teacher associations, and volunteering. What are the countertrends and possible explanations of the erosion of social capital? Putnam discusses these issues and proposes further research and action.
