Rural and Regional Volunteering Support Strategy
This project was undertaken during International Year of Volunteers 2001 to identify the current needs of organisations in rural and regional areas of NSW that involve or engage volunteers to deliver a service as well as those organisations that support volunteers.
Especially considered were needs in relation to the recruitment and matching of volunteers, provision of information and advice on involving and working with volunteers, training of volunteers and staff managing the volunteer program and networks amongst organisations involving volunteers.
The IYV Secretariat in Premier's Department commissioned Australia Street consultants, in conjunction with Associate Professor Peter Phibbs of the University of Sydney, to conduct a survey of both types of organisations to ascertain:-
- who is currently providing support to volunteers / volunteering
- how they are providing it
- where the resources come from
- how well it works and what could be improved.
A total of 294 organisations responded to the survey.
