Resources for Community Participation from IAP2The International Association for Public Participation has produced resources that give a variety of techniques and strategies to enhance people’s participation in decision making.
The International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) is an association of members who seek to promote and improve the practice of public participation in relation to individuals, governments, institutions, and other entities that effect the public interest in nations throughout the world. IAP2 has two free resources online that suggest techniques for involving the public in decision making processes: Public Participation ToolboxThis table lists 45 techniques to share information with people, from fact sheets to leaderless meetings and open space technology. With each technique are summaries of hints for implementing the technique, what can go right and what can go wrong. Follow this link for the Public Participation Toolkit (pdf file - opens in a new browser window) Public Participation SpectrumThis table covers the spectrum of public participation from information to empowerment. It gives the goal, promise to the public and some sample tools for each of the 5 types of participation listed.
