Centre for Popular Education Research and Resources

The Centre for Popular Education at UTS studies and supports popular education that serves the interests of people who are marginalised, or/and are engaged in advocacy, social action or community development activities.

The Centre for Popular Education undertakes research, consulting and teaching activities that are concerned with education and social justice.

Centre members research and teach in a range of arenas, including schools, health promotion, youth work/education, international and community development, adult and community education, basic education, social movements and unions.

The Centre has six major research program areas

They are:

  • Learning and action for the environment
  • Community action and community leadership
  • Pedagogy and politics of working with young people
  • Health education and community development  
  • Community cultural development  
  • Education and advocacy (current work with consumer groups and refugee advocacy groups)
Centre for Popular Education staff offer specialised support in:
  • research about teaching and curriculum politics and practices
  • educational and community development evaluations
  • training needs and capacity building analyses
  • design of organisational development and learning strategies
  • curriculum development.

New Resource: Teaching Defiance: Stories and Strategies for Activist Educators.

This book is for activist adult educators who want to help people make up their own minds and take control of their own lives.

It examines how educators can help people identify choices – to agree, question, challenge or defy – and then learn how to make those choices effective.
