Citizen’s Handbook (Canada)

A quick online guide to community organizing which aims to encourage the emergence of more active citizens - people motivated by an interest in public issues, and a desire to make a difference beyond their own private lives.

This handbook is written by Charles Dobson of the Vancouver Citizen’s Committee

The book is based on the belief that active citizens are a great untapped resource, and citizenship is a quality to be nurtured.

When people become involved in their neighbourhoods they can become a potent force for dealing with local problems. Through co-ordinated planning, research and action, they can accomplish what individuals working alone could not.

The Handbook Chapters:
  • Community Organising: includes Planning and Acting; Evaluating; Leading; Strategic Planning and other useful topics
  • CommunityBuilding Activities: includes Community Gardens; Street Reclaiming; Study Circles; Citizens Juries and many others
  • Full Text Articles: seminal articles on community participation
  • The Citizen’s Library: books related to community participation in development
  • Short Case Studies: best practice in citizen participation and urban governance form UNESCO
  • Links: useful links to other resources
  • Information specific to Vancouver: separate local-specific information
