Engaging Aboriginal fathers
Discussion of focus groups held with 19 family and community workers about engaging Aboriginal fathers. The participants discussed some of the challenges they found in engaging Aboriginal fathers and some of the strategies they found helped.
The challenges were:
1. Creating and maintaining momentum
2. Lack of male workers
3. Not being an Aboriginal man
4. Lack of time
The strategies were:
1. Building strong relationships
2. Having male and Aboriginal workers
3. Creating a father friendly environment
4. Organising specific events or activities
5. Holding camps
6. Having a clear focus
7. Engaging gatekeepers
8. Being flexible
9. Creating a sense of ownership
The focus groups were conducted by Craig Hammond and Graeme Stuart from the Family Action Centre at the University of Newcastle.
